What to Wear for Your Fall Family Session

One of the most common questions I get asked is "what should we wear?"

My first answer is always: wear what feels comfortable for you and your family. If you're tugging at a scratchy sweater or your kid is fighting you over shoes, that discomfort shows up in the photos, no matter how good the color coordination is.

That said, I know staring at a closet trying to figure out "does this all go together" is its own kind of stressful. So here are some color ideas to spark your decision making, not rules to follow to the letter.

The Palette

For fall, I love a warm, layered palette that plays beautifully against turning leaves, weathered wood, and golden-hour light:

Rust — a grounding, autumnal red-orange
Mustard — a warm pop that photographs like sunshine
Olive — a soft, earthy green that pairs with almost anything
Denim — a classic blue that never fights the season
Dusty Rose — a muted pink that adds softness without going too sweet
Camel — a warm neutral that can carry most of the outfit
Espresso — a deep, grounding brown for shoes, accessories, or a jacket

How to Put It Together

You don't need everyone color-matched head to toe and you don’t need to run out in a panic. Instead:

Pick one warm neutral, camel, cream, or soft tan, as your base for most of the family
Layer in two or three accent colors from the palette above, spread across different people rather than repeated on everyone
Mix your textures: corduroy, knits, chambray. It's what makes a family look styled instead of costumed
Let one person carry the boldest color, a mustard sweater or a rust dress, as the visual anchor that pulls your eye through the photo

What to Skip

Big logos or busy graphic prints
Everyone in the exact same color (it flattens the photo instead of adding depth)
Anything neon or icy-bright, it reads cold against an autumn backdrop
